About the role In this role, you will provide pre-operative assessment to ensure patients are fit for surgery, undertaking or arranging pre-operative blood tests and swabs or other investigations where indicated. Liaison with relevant, GPs, clinicians and hospital managers to plan complex admissions is a requirement of this role. You will provide support and assistance to colleagues with post-operative follow up of patients, and conduct post-operative review and wound care management using a multi-disciplinary approach. You will be expected to provide band fill services to patients following gastric band procedures, working with the multidisciplinary team where necessary (dieticians, clinic nurses, surgeons) to ensure optimum post-operative aftercare is provided to bariatric patients. Management of patients who experience complications following discharge is a key element of this role. You will be a central clinical point of contact to whom colleagues will refer complex patient queries, and you will be expected to support them in managing the patient at a local level. You will take a lead role in the collation and development of clinical and non-clinical policies relevant to the weight loss services, and provide assistance to the weight loss team in all aspects of the patient journey. In addition, you will undertake additional training and achieve the required competency level in order to support in the clinical aftercare of gastric band patients. What we’re looking for Essential: Registered General Nurse Sound knowledge of bariatric surgery procedures, the different procedures available and the risks and benefits of each procedure. Experience of caring for patients who are to undergo, or who have undergone, bariatric surgery, with a sound understanding of the end to end patient journey. Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Desirable: Competence in telephonic clinical assessment. Ability to case manage post-operative care of patients who are discharged from hospital following bariatric surgery. Competent in venepuncture. Ability to manage a caseload of patients who require gastric band fill appointments in clinic or to undertake training to achieve competence to do so.
